Public programmer Aisha Hamis may be soft spoken, but don’t let that fool you! Wrangling groups of elementary school children, organizing massive events, and teaching tipsy guests are among her many talents!
Just as Aisha started her job search, she saw Two Rivers Gallery’s online posting for public programmer. She’s no stranger to travel; the Ontario native had just finished her Master’s degree at Newcastle University in England. She accepted the job, and for the first time, headed west for the new role at Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George, British Columbia.
Although Aisha is a recent addition to the gallery team, she is appreciated by all! Recently, she helped organize the Gallery’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Menagerie. “Twisted Circus” was the 9th incarnation of the Halloween party, bringing in a record-setting total of nearly $12,000. Both Aisha and acting assistant curator Meghan Hunter-Gauthier put together an evening chock full of fun: psychics, carnival games, a fire spinner, pole dancers, costume parade, and libations including whiskey and absinthe.
As public programmer, Aisha is a familiar face to many friends of the gallery. Every Thursday morning, she meets with volunteer docents, to plan school tours for the coming week. Aisha also leads MakerLab Youth Immersion program. The program offers young people 15-20 a chance to work directly with local artists. Many of the participants are Aboriginal; they learn First Nations painting and carving from artists Lenard Paquette and Jennifer Pighin. That’s not all; most recently, Aisha started leading our new “Uncork & Unwind” Paint Night series. It’s quickly becoming our most popular class; participants work with a glass of wine in one hand and paintbrush in the other.
Whether she’s with kids or seniors, art aficionados or absolute beginners, Aisha’s smile is one of the brightest around! Learn more about the classes and workshops we offer HERE.
