February 4 to 25, 1990
Young people from 23 BC communities have had artwork accepted or cited for honorable mention in the British Columbia Young Artists (BCYA ’89) Exhibition, designed and coordinated by the Outreach Program of Emily Carr College of Art and Design (ECCAD). The work was chosen from some 2,400 submission to the sixth biennial exhibition which fosters and supports excellence in education throughout BC and beyond.
The drawings, paintings and other work were selected by an eight-member committee of art educatiors and others in cooperation with ECCAD and a BCYA Provincial Advisory Committee, Accepted work will tour to 18 locations in BC from September 1989 to October 1990, beginning at ECCAD’s Granville Island campus in Vancouver.
“We are very pleased to honour these artists in BC’s only province-wide showcase of original creative works by young people,” said Patrice Bovey, chairman of the ECCAD Board of Trustees. “In doing so we celebrate the enthusiasm of our future designers and artists that is so apparent in the many submissions received,” she said.
Selection Committee chairman, Wyn Davies, said his group picked works that best represent various age groups and illustrate a capacity to develop and show technical competence. The artwork of those artists seven years and younger, tend to merge fantasy and reality, often using abstract images. Ages 8-11 are more concerned with the accuracy of image and detail. Ages 12-14 are often fascinated with imagery from the media. And in the 15-19 age group there is a variety of experimentation with ideas and techniques.
Dr. Laurie Rae Baxter, chairman of the Provincial Advisory Committee expressed pleasure at the many entries received from all the parts of the province.
BCYA ’89 is financially assisted by Cassiar Mining, The Christmas Family Ball Society, Endeavour Auction, Friends of ECCAD Society, the Government of British Columbia through ECCAD, the Hamber Foundation, the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation, Opus Framing Ltd., and many individual donors.
The exhibition is sponsored by BC Arts in Education Council, BC Association of Principals and Vice-Principals, BC Art Teachers Association, Association of BC School Superintendants, BC Intermediate Teachers’ Association, BC Museums Association, Federation of Independent School Associations, the Ministry of Education, Correspondence Education Branch and the BC Teachers’ Federation.
