February 10 to March 31, 1991
This year, artists were invited to create a work within the thematic context: “Creative Approaches to Community Issues.” The works were chosen on the basis of their ability to express, in a unique and personal way, a sense of identity and place for both viewer and artists.
Images and Objects is the visual arts component of the BC Festival of the Arts, a society that supports emerging artists in many disciplines. Beginning in 1982, the Festival has brought together the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, the BC Association of Performing Arts Festivals, the BC Student Film and Video, the Association of BC Drama Educators, and the Pacific Coast Music Festival Association, under one umbrella. Together they create an event that takes place in May, each year in a different community in the province. This concept allows for much crossover among the various disciplines and many different geographic areas, both urban and rural.
The BC Festival of the Arts Society also sponsors participating artists, (numbering approximately 1,500) to attend the festival by subsidizing their travel, food and accommodation costs. At the exhibition, the assembly coordinates a four-day series of intensive workshops to further assist artists in their professional development. A final provincial jurying and critique session occurs, where awards of merit and honourable mention are chosen by the jurors and small cash prizes are distributed.
