In Relation to Being and Other Musings is Paula Scott’s reflection on her life’s journey up until now. Having grown up in a context dominated by the Mormon Church, she was indoctrinated into a world of mystery where an omnipotent being can make anything happen. Through these paintings he illustrates scenarios that are as extraordinary as the seemingly impossible events and circumstances in which she was expected to believe. In presenting us with a seemingly magical world she uses the absurd and impossible as devices to provoke thought. In her childhood, the extraordinary were the very things that demanded that one have faith. Here, Scott’s use of them demands that we ask questions.
