Chinese-Canadian artist, Shui-Bo Wang was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for his animated film, Sunrise over Tiananmen Square. This exhibition features original artwork, archival and family photographs from which the film was made, as well as the film itself.
Once a member of the Propaganda Art Troop of the People’s Liberation Army, Wang’s film interweaves his family’s story with that of his country’s, and reveals how his devotion to his leaders slowly turned to bitter disillusionment. Using the technique of kinestatic animation, Wang’s documentary traces his growing disenchantment with official Communist party ideology, and his struggle to formulate a new artistic vision that, for him, is true. This exhibition is organized by the Oakville Galleries.
