The Beach Paintings

Lisa Hebden

The essence of Lisa Hebden’s Beach Paintings is of people just being. Hebden combines imagery derived from her drawings, photographs, magazine clippings and ephemera to develop scenes that could exist in the real world, but which have an otherworldliness to them. “It’s rare to see a person looking sad while wearing a swimsuit,” muses Hebden, “Yet I like the idea that an apparently light scene can have an indefinable, darker side to it.” Focusing on the shore as opposed to the actual ocean or lake, these painting reflect the artist’s interest in the shore as a place of arrival and departure, and a place where the known merges with the unknown.
