Maureen Faulkner, artist and educator, teaches classes at Two Rivers Gallery. During the Fall class, 2016, she wanted to stress the need to let go of past expectations, embrace change and work in a supportive atmosphere like the Gallery.
Each lesson involved a challenge and this painting is the result of those layers of learning. First a brilliant orange and red undercoat, followed by a hard edge leaf, then a sky surrounding it. In Lesson 5, she surprised the students by purposely “ruining the leaf”, challenging the students* to further the change with their own strokes of paint. At the end of that class, Maureen spattered it with light blue, the colour of Grace. In the last class, the students returned to find the portrait added which was then finished in Faulkner’s studio.
*Student artists: Michelle Taylor, Ruth Orydzuk, Terry Mooney. Julie Arthur, Melissa Dymond, Shawna Eberle, Darcy Jobson, Kiera Dall’Osto, Merdedes Minck.
In 2013, Faulkner’s solo exhibition, Cake: A Traveller’s Journey, was in Two Rivers Gallery Rustad Galleria and toured the Regional District of Fraser Fort George. Catalogue available.
