Matrilineal

Rustad Galleria – June 24th to August 7th, 2022

Haley Bassett

In difficult times, tools from our past can help us build new pathways forward. In the exhibition Matrilineal, interdisciplinary artist Haley Bassett draws from her Métis and Eastern European heritage to explore new methods of recovery from gender-based violence. These considerations take shape in often feminized artforms, such as Métis beadwork and matryoshka (nesting) dolls. Through these explorations, Bassett finds new resilience in the face of traumas and tribulations past and present.

Featured artwork: Grandmothers’ Garden, 2021. Seed beads, thread, embroidery hoop, linen and wild rose thorns.
